How to Touch a Towel

Narrated audio encounter, 2024

A guided encounter with a towel that invokes memories of touch and poses questions about what constitutes an archive. The piece was commissioned by artist and curator Tobaron Waxman for the Intergenerational Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Artist Residency, for which artists were asked to create audio guides about sites across Canada of relevance to queer history. How to Touch a Towel uses the towels of Tiohtià:ke|Montreal’s fabled Bain Colonial sauna as an initial prompt to make broader arguments about gay bath house culture generally.
How to Touch a Towel is the third in a series of audio-guide styled encounters with objects and the natural world that are not site-specific, including How to Behold a Flower (2021) and Trees Are Fags (2018).
