I Don’t Know Where Paradise Is
Publication, 2023Nemer’s first solo catalogue, I Don’t Know Where Paradise Is expands upon his exhibition at Carleton University Art Gallery and eponymous audio work distilled from his doctoral research in the libraries of elder gay scholars in Amsterdam, London, Montreal, Paris and Vienna. Designed by Clément Wibaut, the 128-page book features lush colour photographs of the thirteen pairings of floral arrangements created with members of Ottawa’s LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit community in response to chapters of the audio work for the exhibition. Essays by five writers situate Nemer’s work in broader, overlapping contexts, with contributions from Nemer, Heather Anderson, Ann Cvetkovich, Jennifer Evans, John Potvin, and Sandra Dyck.
The book is distributed in North America by Art Metropole, and in Europe and the United Kingdom by Antenne Books. Launch events took place in Ottawa at Spaniel’s Tale with readings by Heather Anderson and Jennifer Evans; in Paris at Studio Ortie with a reading by Renaud Chantraine; and in Ghent at the Kunstenbibliotheek with a discussion between Nemer and Paul Bailey.
